Why the RBC Race for the Kids Belongs on Your Fall Race Calendar

June 21, 2026
September races in Calgary just hit different.
Maybe it’s the cooler air, or the payoff from a summer of training so race day feels less like a grind and more like a celebration. If you’re looking for a race that leans fully into that energy — community, purpose and a genuinely good time — the RBC Race for the Kids should be on your radar.
This year’s race returns Sunday, September 13 at Heritage Park for its 10th anniversary, offering a 6K run (or walk) along the Glenmore Reservoir, plus a full morning — and afternoon — of activities.
More Than Just a 6K
On paper, it’s a straightforward course: a scenic 6-kilometre route with wide pathways and steady pacing — perfect for everything from a casual jog to a controlled effort.
But this race isn’t really about pace.
Since 2017, the event has raised more than $4 million to support important child and youth mental health initiatives through the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, thanks to the fundraising efforts of RBC Race participants and generous community sponsors.
That support has helped fund programs, research and even the creation of The Summit, Calgary’s first community-based mental health centre for young people.
So whether you’re chasing a sweat or just showing up with friends, you’re part of something bigger than the distance.
Come for the Run, Stay for the Day
What sets this race apart is everything that happens before and after you cross the finish line.
It’s the opportunity to make a real difference for kids with your fundraising. And instead of the typical “grab your medal and head out,” the RBC Race for the Kids turns the entire day into a post-run hangout. Your registration includes a pancake breakfast, all-day access to Heritage Park and family-friendly entertainment and activities.
It’s the kind of setup that encourages you to slow down, connect, and actually enjoy race day — something that often gets lost in busier events.
There’s also a shorter 1.7 km loop inside the park, making the event accessible for kids, families, or anyone who isn’t up for a 6K run on a Sunday morning.
Who This Race Is Perfect For
Not every race needs to be a personal best.
This one is ideal if you’re looking for a low-pressure fall event, introducing someone to their first race or craving a strong community feel over competition. You’ll see loads of groups, and families with little ones, all jogging side-by-side — and it all fits.
It’s a reminder that running isn’t always about performance. Sometimes it’s about showing up, being part of something meaningful and enjoying the experience from start to finish.
Planning Your Race Day
Now that you’re ready to sign up, here’s what you need to know:
- Date: Sunday, September 13, 2026
- Location: Heritage Park
- Distances: 6 km Reservoir Route or 1.7 km Park Pathway
- Start: 8:30 am warm-up before staggered starts
Registration includes a performance race T-shirt, medal, and access to everything waiting for you after the finish line. Your fundraising page will be ready for you to get the word out to your network as soon as you’re registered so you can get those donations rolling in to help support kids in our community.
You don’t always need a PB. Sometimes, it’s enough to support a meaningful cause, be part of a great atmosphere and enjoy a solid morning of running with your community.
This race checks all three — and there are also pancakes.
See you there.
